Welcome to the Holmes Service

This website is personal to me and in no way reflects the views of the BBC

Welcome, and many thanks to my family and friends who have helped me set this up. I have to say that it’s quite a novelty to me.

It gives me the chance to make a big announcement, but first of all:

You may be wondering which John Holmes I am – there are plenty of others! – I’m the one who’s worked for BBC Radio and Television for over 50 years.

Although my career began at Broadcasting House in London, I soon moved back to Nottingham to join the new BBC venture known as Local Radio. It was a good move because I was at BBC Radio Nottingham during those halcyon sporting days of Brian Clough, Forest winning the European Cup and Torvill and Dean dominating ice dance. I was there for the rise through the divisions of Jimmy Sirrel’s Notts County and heady times at Nottingham Rugby Club and at Notts County Cricket Club, when Rice and Hadley held sway at Trent Bridge.

The talented music scene in Nottingham was a big influence on me too and, after helping to set up the iconic rock music show ‘Extravaganza’, I was able to move into TV with Toyah Wilcox on Midland Region’s ‘Look! Hear!’ with Toyah Wilcox.

Later, I produced many programmes for Radio 4 including Any Questions, Down Your Way and for Bristol’s flagship Natural History Unit.

I followed that with some wonderful times at Radio Derby and  back here in Nottingham and I must never forget the great outdoors adventure presenting over 30 countryside walks for East Midlands Today.

And now my big announcement.

After many, many years of toil, I’ve published my autobiography, ‘This Is the BBC Holmes Service’
